Fabrication & Welding by Cano Steel Inc.
What it is

From raw steel
to finished members.

Fabrication is where raw plate, bar, and rolled shapes become the columns, beams, stairs, and connections your project is built from. Members are cut, drilled, fit, and welded to the shop drawings, then prepped so they arrive on site ready to set. Welding runs through it all, in the shop for assembly and in the field for the connections that finish the frame.

Cano Steel fabricates in-house rather than buying steel from an outside shop. That means the crew building your steel is the same one that detailed it and will erect it, so tolerances hold and pieces fit the first time. Every weld is run to AWS D1.1 and checked with internal QA before it ever meets a third party inspector.

What the scope covers

  • Beam & Column Fabrication
  • Stairs, Rails & Landings
  • Miscellaneous Metals
  • Field Welding (SMAW / FCAW)
  • AWS D1.1 Standards
  • Pre-Install QA
Built for Southern California

Welds that carry the load.

In a high seismic region like Los Angeles, welded connections are not just joinery, they are part of how a structure resists earthquake load. That is why the AWS D1.1 structural welding standard matters here, and why field weld quality gets real scrutiny during inspection. Fabricating and welding to that standard is the baseline, not an upgrade.

We fabricate for the kind of work this region demands, from tilt-up commercial shells and tenant improvements to exposed steel in custom hillside homes where the welds are visible and the finish matters. Certified welders, clean beads, and pre-install QA keep the work inspection ready whether the piece hides in a wall or becomes the feature of the room.

How we do it

Shop to site, one hand.

01

Drawings to Cut List

We fabricate from coordinated shop drawings, breaking the design into a cut list, material takeoff, and connection details.

02

Cut, Fit and Weld

Members are cut, drilled, and fit, then welded with SMAW or FCAW as the joint requires. Stairs, rails, and misc. metals are built here too.

03

Pre-Install QA

Every assembly is checked for dimension, weld quality, and fit before it leaves the shop, so field surprises stay off the schedule.

04

Deliver and Field Weld

Finished steel ships to site in erection sequence, where our field welders complete the connections that tie the frame together.

What drives cost

Fabrication is priced
from the drawings.

We do not quote steel by the pound sight unseen. We bid from the plans so the number reflects the real work. These are the factors that move it.

Tonnage and piece count

How much steel and how many individual members and connections there are sets the shop hours. More pieces and more welds mean more time on the table.

Complexity of the work

Straight beams and columns fabricate quickly. Stairs, rails, and miscellaneous metals with tight tolerances and finish work take more layout and welding.

Material and connection type

Member sizes, the grade of steel, and whether connections are bolted or fully welded all change material cost and labor.

Inspection requirements

Projects that need special inspection or specific weld testing carry added QA time so the work is documented and inspection ready.

Send us the plans and we will take off the steel, coordinate the connections, and come back with an honest bid.

Questions

Fabrication FAQs.

Are your welders certified, and to what standard?

Yes. Our welders are certified to AWS D1.1 structural welding standards, and we run internal QA before any third party inspection. We weld with SMAW and FCAW processes depending on the joint, the position, and whether the work is in the shop or in the field.

Do you fabricate in the shop or in the field?

Both. Beams, columns, stairs, rails, and miscellaneous metals are fabricated in-house in the shop, then we field weld and fit during erection where the connection calls for it. Because the same company details, fabricates, and erects, the pieces match the drawings and go together clean.

Can you fabricate stairs, rails, and miscellaneous metals, not just frame steel?

Yes. Alongside beam and column fabrication we build staircases, landings, handrails, guardrails, and miscellaneous metals. On past commercial and residential work we have delivered full stair and rail packages as part of the structural steel scope.
